Social Sciences Activities
National History Day
National History Day (NHD) is a year-long academic program and non-profit organization for students in grades 9–12. It encourages students to pick a historical topic fitting an annual theme, conduct deep primary and secondary research, and present their findings through their choice of 5 different types of competitive projects.
Model United Nations
Model UN (Model United Nations) is an academic simulation where students act as diplomats from different countries. Participants debate global issues, negotiate with peers, and write resolutions to solve real-world problems based on their assigned country's laws and views.
Mock Trial
A mock trial is a simulated court proceeding where participants act as lawyers, witnesses, and jurors to try a fictional case. It mimics a real trial—featuring opening statements, direct and cross-examinations, and closing arguments—used primarily for student competitions.
AIU History Bowl
Step into the past and unlock the fun at the Heinz History Center!
During this historical adventure, teams of four 7th or 8th grade students will put their brains to the test as they journey through the exhibits of Western PA's past - from sports to special collections - to solve intriguing challenges, answer thought-provoking questions, and flex their creative thinking and writing skills outside of the classroom. It’s a fast-paced day of teamwork, discovery, and history like you’ve never experienced before—don’t miss it!
Globe Quest
This event is an opportunity for middle school students to test their geography knowledge. The event has groups of students working on planning a world trip, understanding latitude and longitude, and testing knowledge of world capitals and flags.
Current Event/ Theme/President's Competitions
AGLOA Current Events is an Academic Games competition where students from middle through high school answer questions about major political, cultural, and world events from the previous calendar year.
