English and the Humanities
Throughout the year, we offer many different humanities-based event opportunities for our students. Please take a look at the events to get a better explanation of what those events entail.
Humanities Opportunities
Shakespeare Monologue and Scene Contest
A Shakespeare Monologue and Scene Competition is an acting event where students perform pieces from William Shakespeare’s plays. Regional organizations, such as the Pittsburgh Public Theater, host these popular annual events to help young people build performance skills and a love for classical theater.
Poetry Slam
The WPCTE Poetry Slam is an annual spoken word and slam poetry competition for middle and high school students in grades 7 through 12 across Western Pennsylvania. Sponsored by the Western Pennsylvania Council of Teachers of English (WPCTE), the event gives students a safe space to share original work, build community, and amplify their voices.
English Festival
The WPCTE English Festival is an annual literature-focused event organized by the Western Pennsylvania Council of Teachers of English for students in grades 7 through 12. Its goal is to promote quality reading, critical thinking, and public speaking through collaborative team competitions and interactions with renowned young adult authors.
Ink - Wars
Similar to the WPCTE English Festival, this more localized event has students in grades 7 and 8 read a specific set of books in order to compete in fun literary-based activities.
Linguishtik/Propaganda Competition
AGLOA LinguiSHTIK is an interactive, competitive cube game created by the Academic Games Leagues of America (AGLOA) that challenges students in grades 7 through 12 to master and apply advanced grammar, spelling, vocabulary, and sentence-writing skills.
AGLOA Propaganda is an academic competition game designed to teach students how to recognize and analyze persuasive tactics, logical fallacies, and manipulative language used in advertising, politics, and daily media.
Wordsmith Competition
A Wordsmith competition is a creative writing or word-skill contest. At this event, middle school students will take part in timed, fast-paced writing challenges and word play games (some resemble Bananagrams)
