Science and Technology

Throughout the year, we offer many different science and technology-based event opportunities for our students.  Please take a look at the events to get a better explanation of what those events entail.

Science and Technology Opportunities

Eco-Challenge

Students will jump into three hands-on, eco-themed activities that blend science, creativity, and nature exploration. From uncovering the wonders of the Phipps Conservatory to practicing scientific observation, creative writing, and nature connection, there’s something for every curious mind!

Fairchild Challenge

The Fairchild Challenge is a free, multidisciplinary, standards-based environmental education outreach program designed to give high school, middle school and elementary school students an opportunity to creatively shine. By appealing to their innate sense of curiosity about the world around them, the Challenge invites students to investigate the thorniest environmental issues, devise imaginative and effective responses to these issues, and take action to address them.

K-Nex Competitions

The K'NEX Challenge is a hands-on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) competition and learning activity where students work in small teams to design, build, and present a functional prototype that solves a real-world problem using K'NEX construction toys.

AIU Science Bowl

Adventure awaits at the Carnegie Museum of Natural History!

A team of 4 7-8 grade students will embark on a hands-on scientific adventure! Teams will explore the exhibits as they take on a variety of challenges, completing creative and natural science-inspired tasks along the way, while combining teamwork, problem-solving, and exploration for an unforgettable day at Pittsburgh’s most  ext-RAWR-dinary museum.

Faraday Lecture

The Faraday Lecture refers to a prominent public science lecture series named after the pioneering British scientist Michael Faraday. Originally started in 1825 at the Royal Institution in London—where Faraday initiated Christmas Lectures for children and general audiences to make science engaging—the term now spans several related, prestigious traditions worldwide designed to inspire curiosity in physics, chemistry, and engineering.

Creative Conventions

The creative conventions are set up for students who think outside the box.  The event consists of 5 team-based activities that have the students working on creating scenes out of everyday objects like newspaper and planning new inventions.

CyberPatriot

CyberPatriot is the world's largest National Youth Cyber Education Program, created by the Air & Space Forces Association (AFA) to inspire K-12 students to pursue careers in cybersecurity and STEM fields. At the heart of this program is the National Youth Cyber Defense Competition, where middle school and high school student teams act as newly hired IT professionals. Teams are tasked with identifying and fixing security vulnerabilities on virtual networks while maintaining critical services.

BotsIQ

BotsIQ is a non-profit youth workforce development and educational robotics program. Run by the Pittsburgh Chapter National Tooling & Machining Foundation, it uses competitive combat robotics—similar to the BattleBots television show—to spark student interest in modern manufacturing and STEM careers.
